What else can we add to endorse the comments of other guests who have enjoyed their stay at Il Nido? Everything said about your beautiful hotel, the food, the service, the minibus and location is true. We spent a week here in June and explored the area by boat, bus and train. We visited Vesuvius - worth the effort of climbing to the crater to understand the effect it had on Pompei and Herculaneum - and then went on to visit Pompei. Later in the week we travelled by ferry to Naples and visited the National Archeological Museum to see and read more about Pompei and Herculaneum as well as to experience the different influences by the Greeks and Romans on Naples and the surrounding area and to see various collections including the Farnese Collection and the "Secret Room". We also visited "Napoli Sotterranea" (www.napolisotterranea)to see excavations made 5,000 years ago under the city of Naples - absolutely fascinating and a great way to cool off -on a 1.5 hour tour of underground caves and passageways, then on to a Greek-Roman Theatre IV BC to II C AD discovered recently under a "basso" in Via Anticaglia. We heeded the comments of previous guests (and a couple of elderly locals on buses that we travelled on!) who said beware of pickpockets in Naples; so we wore no jewellery and only wore body belts (not bum bags or carried backpacks). We felt perfectly safe wandering the alleys in Spaccanapoli. We also took the Funiculare Centrale up to the heights of Vomero to admire the views from Castel Sant'Elmo over the city and the bay. The second funculare took us back down to the port. Our visits to Capri with walks up to Villa Jovis and the boat trip around Capri, the highlight of which was the row boat ride into the Grotta Azzurra, were very enjoyable. But the only way to experience the true Amalfi coast and its magnificent views is to take the local bus from Sorrento train station to Amalfi via Positano then take another bus to Ravello. It was always so relaxing to return every evening to our "nest" and enjoy the breathtaking views from our balcony or on the terrace whilst eating the best food in town (presentation, taste, service and value!) The whole family looked after us so well; thank you to Gianni, Dino and Marina and everyone else behind the scenes. There was not sufficient time to do this area justice and we will definitely return next year. Thank you Il Nido, from Justin and Lynne, Brian and Ann.

The room was impeccable and offered a breathtaking view of the sea, the Vesuvius and Napoli, the shuttle service to Sorrento was perfect and the food served in your restaurant was great! May 2003 We stayed at Il Nido for a very enjoyable week last month. We've traveled extensively in Europe, incuding Italy, and considered this one of our best trips. Thank you so much for a lovely time, for arranging pick-up and drop-off at beginning and end, and being cheerfully helpful at any and all times. Despite the weather report, which predicted rain every day, the sun followed us the entire time and the weather was beautiful. We were also happy to see fellow Americans, despite the world situation. English was widely spoken, everyone was friendly. Before we left, we found some comments here very helpful, so we'll add a couple: You don't need a car. Amalfi coast was lovely, as was Amalfi itself. But take the extra bus trip to Ravello, it is well worth it. Among other lovely attractions, we have never had a better Italian dining experience than at Cumpa Cosimo. Very, very special! Vietri was just o.k. National Archaeological Museum in Napoli was very good, with a special exhibit from Pompeii and Herculaneum, but watch your belongings everywhere in that town. We could hardly wait to escape back to lovely Sorrento. In Sorrento, we agree with a previous posting here in that we loved Da Gigino, where we ate 3 times at least. (The webcam is located outside our window, so I did have a bit of a preview... but nothing like the real thing.) We had the distinct pleasure of staying at Il Nido in May '03. It is not only a very well run hotel, but has the most beautiful views of Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and Sorrento. The only thing that improved that view were the wonderful meals that we enjoyed on the terrace.
The staff is kind and cheerful and the bus into town a great help. Having stayed at many hotels (from 1 to 4 star)over many years, this is at the top of the list.

Thinking of going to Sorrento? Our group of three adults did, and we spent six wonderful days at the small, family-run “Il Nido Hotel Ristorente”. We would recommend it highly for the following reasons: • The view from our room with balcony was breathtaking, the room itself immaculate and nicely furnished. • Friendlier staff we have not met and we have been traveling for forty-five years. The owners are smart too, providing shuttle service to downtown Sorrento several times each day, and computer stations with internet access so that guests can get in touch with family and friends. • Then there is the restaurant: the food was invariably delicious, the service attentive and the prices very reasonable. Who could ask for more?

Just returned home from 12 days in Italy yesterday. We stayed in 5 different hotels and Il Nido was by far the best. The dinner we had at the restaurant was the most enjoyable(and most reasonably priced)of the whole trip. I will be looking at the web cam every day to remember the great time we had and the wonderful view.

Once again we are back in Denmark after a wonderweek at Il Nido. How You can run such a classy hotel and kitchen at the prices You do is incredible. Dino, always alert and friendly and open for all the different wishes and questions from your guests - and Gianni, always with a humorous twinkle in your eyes (“I drive in the morning and cook in the evening”) and together with your new chef responsible for the simple but so tasty kitchen (la cucina saporita!!). The “spaghetti astice” (lobster) was a fantasticly flavoured and tasty dish (***) and for only 15€ a heavenly bargain!! To all people around the world: If you are tempted by the internet-presentation of Il Nido then don’t hesitate, what you see is not just what you get, you get a lot lot more, the best hoteldeal in a lifetime – not to mention the fantastic location and view over the Bay of Naples. So to Dino and Gianni and all the “Persico family” – and the sweet Marina – we wish You all the best in the world and once again thanks for yet another wonderful vacation. On our first trip to Italy in April 2003, we were thrilled during our visits to Rome, Florence, Venice, Cortina and Sorrento/Amalfi Coast. My wife and I agree that our stay at Il Nido was the most surprisingly delightful part of our trip. We were wowed by the awesome beauty of the area, but were even more thrilled by the beautiful "little nest", which sits high on the hill overlooking Sorrento, Mt Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. The view from our room was breathtaking, but equally thrilling was the service, friendly atmosphere, wonderful resturant and the genuine effort by the family who own this beautiful hotel, to make us comfortable and welcome every minute of our stay. We just came back from 2 week no-itinerary driving vacation in Italy. Driving in Italy was definitely a challenge! We spent our first 3 days at Hotel Il Nido and explore Napoli area and Amalfi coast. We "accidentally" ended up in Il Nido, but what a pleasant surprise! The Hotel was very comfortable, very very quiet (this was a problem for all other hotels that we slept), fantastic view of Sorrento, and the staff (Gianni and company) was very friendly and courteous. To our surprise, the food at the hote restuarant(both breakfast-hot donuts and dinner) was much better than what downtown restuarants offer.

We recently spent a great week at Il Nido to celebrate our Silver Wedding. It was my ambition to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, and I achieved it. (Despite a strike by the "unemployed" at Herculaneum.) We also climbed Vesuvius and went on the bus to Amalfi, the train to Naples to see the museum, and by boat to Capri. The public transport is wonderful - reliable and cheap. You can actually walk into Sorrento: if you go to Priora and then Crocevia, you go down a lot of steps with the stations of the cross at each corner. But get the hotel bus back!
We had a lovely time, and we now enjoy a peek at the webcam during the lunch hour at work to see what the weather is doing in Italy, and to remind us of the sun and hospitality at Il Nido. (What is a Nido by the way?)

To Gianni and company, We would like to thank you all so much for the excellent service and accomodations while we stayed with you March 23-26. The extra shuttle service for my wife and me (during non-scheduled times) as well as for my parents, was really appreciated. The view is gorgeous, but I regret we forgot to take a photo from the roof, with Vesuvius in the background. Also, the food was outstanding--freshly baked croissants and doughnuts at breakfast, with marvellous coffee; at dinner, the mixed seafood plate, with grilled calamari, is "to die for"! On most of my trips, I don't eat dinner in the hotel--but it was really worth it, this time! I would recommend Il Nido to any of my friends or family who visit Sorrento. Well done!!

Ho scelto IL NIDO perchè, al contrario, il suo sito è chiaro, fatto bene e, soprattutto, riesce a "comunicare" in modo positivo. E poi, come non apprezzare il suo appello alla PACE? It's been three weeks since we left Il Nido and are now back in warm Panama, but we remember with great delight the wonderful time we had, this time (March 6 through March 10) as well as we did 2 years ago.
The spectacular view of the bay and Vesuvius, the the comforts of home, the wonderful kitchen and delicious food, the very efficient minibus service, free access to Internet, --we are looking forward to another visit on a future vacation. Ah, Sorrento and Il Nido, now a part of our wonderful memories.

We spent a wonderful few days in Your Hotel in June 2002 and since you have the Shuttle Bus we recommend your Hotel to all our friends who travel by Train and Car . I have great Video and love your Computer for E Mail . One problem : When asking Italians : Where is the MEETING PLace ,no one knows. You have to tell your Guests the Italian word for Bus MEETING Place so they can ask local people for directions if they are lost.Ralph Keil

We stayed for 10 days, 9th - 19th March, 2003. First time we'd booked anything on the internet so we were delighted to find that everything that is stated on the site was a reality on arrival. The rooms were clean and very comfortable with first class views over Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius. The Restaurant provided a varied menu at very reasonable prices. Breakfast offered a variety of choices to suit us all. Getting to and from Sorrento was well organised and easy, don't be put off that the hotel sits on the hill because there's no problem about taking you up and down, day or night. Service for clients is number one priority in this hotel. The front lounge became our haunt and we enjoyed tea, coffee and drinks. We met lots of great people who were enjoying it all too! Spent several days at il Nido last Sept. as part of a four women, five week, 5000 mile, 7 country trip of a lifetime. Drove our rental car right up the hill to il Nido! The accomodations, the food, the scenery and the limoncello were superb! Wish we could have stayed longer and do hope to return one day. Everyone was so friendly and helpful.

My 81 year old mother, my sister and I visited Il Nido last month. We think it was one of the best places we stayed during our entire trip to Italy. Away from the traffic and crowds, it was nice to relax and enjoy the view. My mother particularly enjoyed your hotel and food. She enjoyed speaking Italian with Gianni, Dino and others there. The van shuttle worked well for us.
I hope we can return so my husband can enjoy Il Nido and Sorrento. We will also bring our daughter, since Il Nido is very child friendly. I check your web cam at least once a week to get my "Italy fix". Bella Italia!

A colleague recommended Il Nido but it far surpassed the rcommendation. The location and view must be the best in the Bay of Napoli. The food is excellent and the service both at the Hotel and back and forth to Sorrento were great, all amongst the olive groves.
Il Nido was the best place from which to visit Pompeii, the purpose of our visit "educational" ;-) for our son. We are now hooked on brochetta and the wonderful tomato souces on the pto see asta.
As well as Pompeii, the Scavi di Castellamare is well worth a visit to see the frescos if you can survive the walk through the traffic from Castellamare station.
We will be visiting Il Nido again visit the Amalifi Coast and Capri (and to visit the rest of Pompeii and to get some more Limonchello:-)

Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful! My wife and I enjoyed our 5 nights with you at Il Nido. The view from the room was lovely, the food excellent (the local red wine is superb)and your dry humour Gianni was very funny. PS. We dined at Trattoria Da Gigino for 3 nights. Small restaurant off the small road full of stall-like shops off Piazza Tasso. (Via P.R. Giuliani, 58). The food there was also fantastic, with a Spaghetti Matriciana to die for. Best I had in my life!!!! Their house red was also incredible. A local band wander in every night and entertain with music - lovely!

Anyone travelling to Sorrento should not hesitate to stay at Il Nido and you will find a little piece of heaven on earth. The hotel is beautiful with views which are priceless. They will really take your breath away!!!!! The hotel even offers a free minibus service several times a day which will take you to the port or harbour for all of your excursions. Also make sure you eat at the hotel restaurant - the food is outstanding - and very reasonably priced. Last but not least,the people. Gianni,Dino,everyone was so friendly and helpful that we could not have asked for anything more. We will definatly return to Il Nido next year,hopefully for longer as it is an ideal base to explore the area from.

We recently spent a week in Sorrento and loved every bit of it, the hotel was 1st class, the rooms were great,the views spectacular, the restaurant and food were lovely and all working there were extremely helpful and friendly. The bus service is a great idea and so useful. I must say the fact that I found this Hotel to be the cheapest in Sorrento did worry me before I arrived, but these fears were totally misguided, I have recommended this hotel to friends and family who can't wait to go.

If you are thinking about a holiday in this part of the world you will not get better value for money anywhere. The hotel was most comfortable, the food was excellent and the staff most helpful and friendly. Unusually for a hotel restaurant the prices were very affordable and you also have the stunning view from the terrace looking down on Sorrento and across the Bay of Naples towards Vesuvius. Although 5k out of Sorrento you do not need a car to get the best out of this area. The hotel shuttle takes you to the town, railway station or port three times in the morning to connect with bus, train and ferry services. In the evening it makes frequent trips into Sorrento and with the last shuttle returning to the hotel at 11.30pm there is plenty of time for an unhurried evening in town. There is also a public bus service which operates from outside the hotel and this is also very reliable. Book as early as you can because as more and more people get to find out about IlNido you will find it gets booked very quickly.

We have just returned, with our friends Dave and Jill Playford, from an extremely enjoyable stay and would like to comment on the excellent service we received. This is a family run hotel in the truest sense of the word and we felt very much as if we belonged for the duration of our short stay. It would be hard to imagine a more idyllic view from our bedroom balcony, high on the hill above Sorrento and overlooking the grand sweep of Naples Bay!It made it very pleasant to sit and relax at any time of the day but perhaps most especially when we returned after long days of sightseeing. Everyone at the hotel was very kind and friendly and nothing was too much trouble - even when we turned up hungry and thirsty late into the evening.The restaurant is excellent value and we chose to eat there three nights rather than go back down to town. For me Gianni's rides into town certainly brought back memories of dodgem cars and rollercoasters - the other members of our party relished both the excitement and my reactions! During our six day visit we found it very easy to get about on public transport and we were able to visit Pompei, Vesuvius, Capri, Amalfi and Ischia at well below half the cost of organised excursions.Gianni also arranged for our late flight to be met at the airport by taxi (£60)(try to arrive earlier rather than later!) and to return on the airport bus (£12).By using 'Go' flights it made it a very reasonably priced break for such an excellent destination. We would have no hesitation in recommending 'IL Nido' and certainly will return without hesitation when we next find ourselves in Sorrento.

What more can I add to what everyone else has said about there stay. Just THANKYOU for a fantastic week last week. The hotel was wonderful and WOW what spectacular views. The Mini bus was always on time and dropping you off wherever was never any trouble for Gianni. Thanks Gianni for entertaining my son Stefan on the trips too and from town he said it was better than been at Alton Towers on the White Knuckle rides. The room was so clean and fresh, we have never slept so well. Great firework display on our last night in Sorrento. Anyone reading this guest book as you have read its a MUST stay here & you'll be back I can guarrantee it, we will be. Pompeii, Herculeneum , Mt Vesuvius and Capri is a must they were spectacular. But be warned of the Guides they are very pushy, you are better off with the Sita bus and going round by yourself and its cheaper. Just thankyou Ilnido For the best holiday ever.

I just wanted to thank you all for the amazing and excellent sevice we recieved at your beautiful hotel. My mother and I spent 3 weeks together in Europe and the highlight of our trip was Sorrento and Il Nido. Our favorite restaurant of the ones we ate at in Sorrento was also @ Il Nido. The value and service is unbeatable.
To anyone reading this who is considering going to Sorrento, go! It is a clean and beautiful city full of lemon and orange groves, flowers and kind people. Make sure that you STAY @ IL NIDO!! I cannot dream of staying anywhere else, Il Nido was SO nice. Also make sure you reserve early for the sea & vesuvius view rooms. May is also a good time to go becuase it isn't too too hot just yet (you can still sunbathe tho).
Also... if you only have one day to see Roman ruins and have to choose between Pompeii and Herculaneum, go to Herculaneum (1) It's better preserved (2)you can actually see it in a day and (3) the main sites will be mostly unlocked.

My wife, sister and I just returned from a grand tour of Italy, but the final, very special leg was in Sorrento. By reading the Graffiti Wall we came across the Hotel Il Nido, which was praised for service, bright airy rooms with a great porch view of Sorrento, the Bay of Naples, and the mainland, from Vesuvius to Napoli. All this was true Even the dining area was expansive and had it's own porch overlooking the lemon orchards and sea. What was really special was how Gianni, Dino, brothers, and their parents were so helpful. We had l7 swimmers and their families at the hotel. Our mission was to swim from Capris to Ischia, islands separated by 16 miles of sea. In relay form we rotated four teams, each swimming three 45 minute legs until we finished this great swim in 8 hours 45 minutes. We started inside the Blue Grotto no less. Gianni made a special trip to take us to the boats early in the morning, pick us up. And the hotel runs a bus service to and from town, three miles away. Dino did every little thing he could to problem solve and book excursions for us. The parents are wonderful cooks. Pull up their web site and check the menu...modest in price and quickly served for such a huge group of 30 people. All was delicious. Red Table wine flowing at $6.00 euros per litre kept us in a festive mood every evening. I worked for months to set this up with Gianni, and he always got back within a day, even finding and chartering the boats for us. The feedback from our group is that they would go back to the Il Nido in a minute. I think you would too.

Anyone who is traveling to Sorrento should make every effort to book accommodations in the Il Nido. My wife and I spent five nights there in May 2002, and we were absolutely amazed. The rooms are very nice, the view is magnificent, the food is great, the staff is friendly and helpful; and the price is so low that I thought there was some miscommunication when I made the reservations. Even if Sorrento were not the most beautiful place I've ever been, I would return just to stay in the Il Nido.

My mother sister and I had an absolutely wonderful 4 night stay at hotel il nido in May. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this hotel. The staff is extremely wonderful, friendly and very helpful. We ate at the hotel restaurant 3 nights. The food is great, and so is the view. We had a lovely spacious room with a balcony and a spectacular view of the bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The hotel shuttle was very convienient. It also helped to develop friendships with the other guests at the hotel. The warm atmosphere of the hotel also invited discussions amongst travellers. The price for our meals and room were so good. We have just spent 6 nights at Il Nido and we had a wonderful holiday. The hotel is comfortable and spotlessly clean with stunning views from the rooms and the terrace. Gianni and Dino and all the staff are extremely helpful and make you feel very welcome and "at home". The food is excellent as is the wine. We (a family of four with childen 4 and 11)just returned from a 2 week trip to Switzerland and Italy, including 3 nights at the Il Nido. I will say that the hotel was one of the best hotel values on our trip. The hotel is very clean, the hosts make you feel like family, the food is excellent and very reasonably priced, and the views of Mt. Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples (from the rooms and the restaurant)are tremendous.
It was a magnificent week in Sorrento. It became better staying at ilnido hotel. Great hospitality, clear and large rooms but above all the best view I had during my holidays. I'm strongly recomment you the place.

We just came back from a whirlwind tour of Italy and we ended it in Sorrento, staying 2 nights at Il Nido. I have to say that this is THE best place I've stayed during my whole trip, and it is also the best I've stayed on my tours around Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels. The family that run Il Nido was really friendly and very helpful. The food was great and reasonable, especially their spaghetti alle vongole (clams). The view from the terrace is breathtaking, and the ambience at the hotel was warm and friendly. Its a good place to just relax and unwind, and have a friendly chat with the other guests. This is what I would call a warm hotel hospitality, we've never been treated better at any other place. Thanks a whole bunch for rounding off our holiday in the best possible way. My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at Il Nido, in late April, 2002. The hotel is very comfortable, the rooms are good-sized, and there are beautiful views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius from many of the rooms, from the dining room and from the tanning deck. The staff is very friendly, and even found us a place to stay for our last night in Sorrento, after we discovered we had made an error in our booking, and Il Nido was full. The price is certainly right for the quality of the hotel and the food. There is a hotel bus that will take guests into town, and picks them up at scheduled times. Overall, we had a lovely stay and would highly recommend this hotel to any travellers to Sorrento.
We had a lovely stay at Il Nido. We found the staff super helpful when you needed them but, never bothersome. The food at their resturant is good and plentiful. We wondered if staying out of the city would be difficult but, found the bus service prompt, friendly and not a worry. We would recommend Il Nido to anyone. You couldn't ask for better hosts. Wonderful hospitality, beautiful views, lovely food. The rooms are perfect - quiet, elegant and clean. The staff are friendly, warm and ready to go out of their way to help. A great atmosphere, with a mixture of families, couples and lone travellers. The morning journey into town on the minibus was full of talk of the day's plans, swapping of information, ideas and advice: where to eat, what to do, places to visit and how to get there; then in the evening, on the way back to the hotel, stories of the day's adventures. Sorrento is a lovely town - you could spend the whole holiday just exploring the backstreets, cafes and shops - but it is also so easy to travel from there, by train, bus or boat. Pompeii and Herculaneum are stunning and haunting, Capri beautiful and refined. Naples vibrant, full of life. We were sad to leave, and have promised ourselves that we will return!

I really enjoyed my stay (April 16-April 24, 2002) at the Il Nido. My room had a beautiful view of the bay, the food was wonderful, and the free bus service was timely. We recently spent a great seven days at Il Nido. We do a lot of traveling and as far as we are concerned, Il Nido has few equals as everything is is as good as it gets in this marvelous family hotel. Still can't understand why it takes Dino 10 minutes to get to Sorrento and it only takes Gianni 7. We would definitely highly recommend this hotel to anyone and can't wait to return for another great week(or longer) Very best to Marina and entire family. Mom and Pops should be very proud. P.S. Before I even arrived at Il Nido I was quite surprised at the level of personal service Gianni provided in terms of information and flexibility. I have stayed at places before which have been a bit more upscale, but I have never stayed at place where the staff is quite so friendly and accommodating. We really enjoyed our stay with you. Your hotel is attractive and clean with wonderful views. The evening meals were great, and the children enjoyed the access to emails on the Internet. We hope they didn’t spend too much time on the computers so the other guests managed to have some access as well! Your regular minibus to Sorrento throughout the day was an excellent idea. We should have used it more often, particularly when we decided to drive to Pompei instead of going by minibus/train and got stuck in a 2 hour traffic jam on the way back! It was no problem being outside Sorrento since it only took a few minutes by minibus into town, and on the other hand it was great to be able to get straight onto the road to Positano without having to drive out of town. We have many happy memories, particularly our trips to Vesuvio, Positano, Ravello (Villa Rufolo) and Anacapri (chair lift to summit) – all had unforgettable views – and of a delightful lunch on the beach at Baia di Puolo. Thank you very much for enabling us to have a wonderful week.

We arrived back in Britain a week ago from Il Nido. We really didn't think it could possibly be as good as it appeared from Gianni's excellent web-site. He can't have good I.T. skills AND run an excellent hotel, SO WE THOUGHT! BUT HE DOES... we were not disappointed...clean, spacious rooms, good food, reasonably priced in a restaurant with breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples. We spent 6 days here and loved it! Johnnie is a wonderful host, the location up the mountain is worth the fact that you can't walk from the down town (actually you could if you were ambitious) Because their hourly shuttle makes it simple, and the views are increadible. Try to get the balcony rooms and you will find yourself coming home early to just sit out and enjoy Naples bay at sunset. Their restaurant is pretty darn good also. Really you can't beat this as a base of operations for seeing all of the Naples area via the Circumvesuvia rail service. Don't forget to allow enought time to see sorrento as well. One of the local wine stores is putting together winery tours that should be very nice if you are into that thing-Ask Johnnie. We'd do it again in a heart beat. Jim Meehan, McLean

We have recently returned from Italy, having stayed for 7 nights at Hotel Il Nido. It is a most wonderful hotel. The "sea view" bedrooms have a spectacular view over the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Gianni and Dino, the owner brothers, made us most welcome and cheerfully and efficiently provided us with the service that we all expect at a hotel. Then there were extras. The food in the restaurant was excellent and reasonably priced. The free minibus service, to and from Sorrento town centre enabled us to get to the town without any hassle. It also gave us a wonderful oportunity to chat to other guests at the hotel, swapping sightseeing tips. As well as efficient transport, it is a marvellous way of making friends. 13.3.2002 Just returned from five nights holiday in Sorrento, four of which were spent at the Hotel Il Nido. Many thanks for the way all at the hotel made our holiday so special. We initially booked for three nights, but once there wanted more! Unfortunately the hotel was fully booked one night, but Dino was most helpful in finding a nights board on the beautiful island of Capri (though the hotel was nowhere near the standard of the Il Nido and we were most grateful to be back there for the final night). This was our first holiday abroad without our children for a very long time, as we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. We could not have wished for a better place to spend this occasion. Breathtaking views, fantastic clean accommodation, excellent food and good company. This hotel is the very best you would wish to find for many reasons: there are great views of Vesuvius and Naples Bay (even more breathtaking than the webcam). The bedrooms are extremely clean, spacious and comfortable, the cotton sheets being changed every few days, on those huge matrimonial beds! with clean cotton towels each day. The food is freshly prepared daily by family members, which is excellent and plentiful. The free minibus to and from Sorrento, the free use of the internet and of course the tremendous help and friendliness of both Dino and Gianni is exceptional. We are so grateful to you all for giving us such a spendid holiday, even the guests were great, with many travelling experiences to exchange (especially Roy & Barbara, now somewhere between Ischia and Rome) Without hesitation we would recommend your superb hotel with those great prices, to everyone. In the words of Arnie Scwarzenegger "we will be back" and hopefully later this year.
Our four-night stay at the Il Nido ranks as one of our most memorable hotel experiences AND without question our best hotel bargain ever.
Our balcony view looking across the tops of lemon groves to the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius was spectacular (you can check that same view from the Webcam, which was right above our balcony.) The food was plentiful and quite good. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. Providing guest access to a computer and a fast Internet connection was a real plus. And best of all, the service was always friendly and helpful. Thanks to Gianni and Dino and their families for a wonderful hotel experience in Sorrento.

My wife and I stayed at IL Nido in January, along with other members of our family (January 14-19). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and found the IL Nido a comfortable and convenient hotel. It was central to the areas we wanted to visit - for example Pompeii, Herculaneum, The Amalfi Coast, Paestum etc. The service was very good and the hotel mini-bus provided a quick service to and from Sorrento. We had a number of meals at the restaurant and enjoyed them all.
We would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to friends.

Vor 2 Wochen kamen wir aus Leipzig für ein paar Tage nach Sorrent in das sonnige Italien. Das Hotel Il Nido gefiel uns schon durch seine Internetpräsentation. Im Urlaub sahen wir uns den Vesuv, Herkulaneum, die Ausgrabungsstätten von Pompeji und die Amalfiküste an. Es waren herrliche Tage, die dadurch noch besser wurden, dass wir uns im Hotel sehr wohl fühlten. Alles ist sehr ordentlich und sauber, das Essen und der Wein schmeckten ausgezeichnet und der Service war zu jeder Zeit sehr gut. Obwohl wir einen Mietwagen hatten, nutzten auch wir den zuverlässig funktionierenden Shuttle-Service nach Sorrent. Und wir fanden es sehr angenehm, dass jeder Hotelgast den kostenlosen Internetzugang im Hotel nutzen konnte. Hello Gianni Dino and other guests who may be planning a trip to Sorrento!Would firstly like to thank Gianni and Dino for making our stay very enjoyable you were extremly helpful especially since it was our first trip to Italy we really appreciated the advice you gave us.To other travellers to Sorrento we absoulutley recommend Il Nido! It's 5km out of Sorrento but this is not a problem as the minibus sevice is great and will take you straight to the station or the port.The hotel offers a wonderful family atomosphere and the two brothers cannot do enough to help the prices are excellent and the veiw from the balcony is breathtaking,Vesuvius is directly across the bay from the hotel and if you look at the webcam you will get an idea,For me Pompeii is just amazing we spent two days there which you have to do as it is huge.Hopefully one day we will return to Sorrento and would without a doubt stay at Il Nido again. Dear Gianni and his Family, We spent five wonderful nights in your wonderful hotel in the summer of 2000. It was a great hotel with clean and spacy rooms, incredible good food, spectacular view and best service ever. We can not thank Gianni enough for waking up at 3:30 AM in the morning to take us to the train station (no cabs were available at that hour) and not even accepting money for it. Dear future guests, I would urge you to stay in this hotel if you are planning to visit Sorrento. The view is much more beautiful than it looks in the webcam. It was the nicest thing to have your breakfast watching the blue sea and Pompei. Don't worry about it not being not very close to downtown Sorrento. They offer free shuttle service and they will even give you a ride when you really need it! We are looking forward to visiting Sorrento and Il Nido again.

We spent a wonderful four days with you back in September and it was the hightlight of our trip! Even though we booked too late to get one of your view rooms, we found our "budget room" excellent. Having breakfast and dinners on your lovely terrace, with the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius in front of us was memorable. (The food was wonderful too!) Your minibus service is great. Next time we come, we won't bother renting a car. We found your prices very reasonable, for all the wonderful service you offer and we won't hesitate to recommend your hotel to anyone who should be travelling to Italy. Dear Dino, Gianni and family, A Merry Christmas to you all, I hope you have a good rest. We stayed with you for a week in mid October this year and our friends are tired of hearing what a wonderful holiday it was. The view over the bay from our balcony was magnificent and the weather perfect. The website says the hotel is not of walking distance to Sorrento, but there is a beautiful and easy walk down hill walk through two villages then on to a well paved and shallowly stepped path. This is just below the hotel through lemon and olive groves and friendly villagers who don't see many tourists via this route. Took us 20-30mins and we're middle aged! Ah, lovely Sorrento! We had such a wonderful time when we stayed at Il Nido - the view was breathtaking and it was wonderful to have breakfast and dinner on the balcony overlooking the bay and Vesuvius!! What an experience!!
We will never forget the morning we went to mass at the little church down the hill with our friends - the LoBue's. The priest was so cordial to us - the grapes he gave us were delicious (I believe they came from your vineyard).
We can't say enough about our stay and will surely recommend Il Nido to our friends and relatives. Hope to see you again - real soon.

It's been 2 months since we stayed at your place Il Nido. The three days we stayed at your Pensione was enjoyable, your service was excellent, greatly appreciated and exciting (the mini bus ride to Sorrento). The view from the belcony and observation deck was fabulous. The food was excellant and having your meals out on the outside belcony was wonderful. If you have an opportunity, say hello to the local priest from the people from Pittsburgh Pa.. He treated us like we were special. It was unfortunate that we could not stay for the Grape Festival. I am already planning to return. I don't now when, but soon. This time we will stay longer. For those of you planing a trip to Sorrento may I recommend Il Nido. Dear Gianni-Thank you, your family and staff for a most memorable ten-day visit to Sorrento in October. What will always remain in our memories is your very gracious and considerate hospitality, the magnificent view of the bay, the bus rides to and from Sorrento (these we will never forget) and the evening meals, especially the veal and pasta dishes. We should also mention Marianishke (?) with her cute smile and the twinkle in her eyes when she tried to teach us Italian and always ended up saying MAMA MIA. THINGS YOU SHOULD DO ARE; 1-Upon arrival go to the info center for maps and schedules. Walk thru the building to the Foreigners Club then to the balcony and enjoy the view with a drink while checking the maps. 2-Pompeii and Herculaneum (or at least one) via the train. Only 25 minutes 3-Amalfi Coast-visit Ravello-it's the best. Bus trips available. 4-When going to Capri/Ischia-buy one-way tickets so you are not locked in to a return time. When ready to return buy you ticket at Capri/Ischia-the price is the same 5-Capri-take the funicular up-hike to Villa Jovis/Mount Tiberio. Hike to the Arco Naturale/Grotta di Matromania/Pizzolungo-Tragara. On this hike the easiest way is to go to the arch first and end up back at the piazza. Our second trip to Capri we took the bus ride to Ana Capri (quite an experience)-took the bus ride to blue grotto-rode the chair lift to Monte Solaro. 6-Ischia-take the EDbus around the island. Get off and on as often as you want for no extra charge. 7-RELAX-enjoy a cappuccino-there are NO BAD restaurants or cafes in Sorrento. THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO 1-Rent a car. Public transportation especially trains will take you everywhere at very reasonable rates with no hassle. 2-Hire a cab-We were in Sorrento and realized we had to go to the laundermat. We took a cab to Ilnido to save time-picked up our clothes and were ready to return to Sorrento on the 6PM minibus to do our laundry. The taxi cost 46,000 lire one way - VERY EXPENSIVE LAUNDRY. We can thoroughly recommend this family run hotel to everyone, particulary to SOUTH AFRICANS on our embattled Rand which makes travel in Europe very expensive. Il Nido offers really good value for money. We stayed at Il Nido in October 2001. What a great place, good service, a very comfortable spotlessly clean well equipped twin budget room with a balcony. The free mini bus service in and out of town works very well, in fact we much preferred to be at the hotel's beautiful quiet location after the hubub of Sorrento town. We also had the chance to meet other hotel guests and swop travel experiences on the mini bus ride to and from the hotel.
The view from the hotel terrace is supurb! Views over the olive groves, Sorrento and its lovely coastline, the whole gulf of Naples with Vesuvius in the middle of the bay.
Nothing in this hotel's website is overstated. You will not be disappointed if you make a reservation. We would most definitely book at this hotel again.

Ciao! Johnny and family! I want to thank you for my wonderful stay at your hotel in ottobre. I stayed in room #126 for 5 nights...11/10-15/10. My room was lovely...what a view and very clean and comfortable. Breakfast on the terrace was nice and it was easy to meet other guests. You promote a friendly, relaxed, and quiet atmosphere. The shuttle service you provide makes it easy to get to the marina, train/bus station, even though Johnny can make the downhill drive more exciting than a roller coaster. However, I did get to my train on time. I stayed at 6 different hotels and 1 apartment during my 3 weeks in italia and I want you to know that your hotel was my favorite.
I hope to return to italia next year in ottobre, if politics allow, and I plan to return to Il Nido for another 5 days, providing room 126 is available.

I could have stayed there the entire 2 weeks! The service and hospitality offered to us was superb and the mini-bus is excellent. (and a fun ride!) I highly recommend this hotel to everyone I talk to who is planning a trip to Italy. Hopefully we can return again soon.

The main benefit was the mini bus service back to the hotel. Our view from the balcony was marvellous. Mount Vesuvius was across the bay. There was so much to do and a return journey will be needed! Your suggestions on how to travel to certain sites were much appreciated. Each day started with a good breakfast and the essential mini bus ride to the Sorrento railway station. No car needed!

I booked " il nido" for our holiday in August because the rates were so good. When we arrived and saw the huge room with the beautiful view for our family of four we were delighted. The restaurant was so nice that we only bothered to eat out one night. Our kids adored the pasta and ice-cream and their dad's wallet adored them even more." Il Nido" is one of the few places you have no reservations in recommending it to your friends.We did not have a car but the complimentary transport made getting around so easy even with two kids aged 9 and 5. i stayed at hotel "il nido" restaurant for three nights during a ten day tour around Italy. Il Nido is the very best all-round hotel we have experienced in Italy. Not only is the view breathtaking, the rooms crisp and clean, but the food is absolutely the best in Italy! A room with a view is for sure. It was wonderful sitting on the balony and gazing into the night lights of Sorrento. Sorrento (and Il Nido) is truly a beautiful place with lots to do. My husband and I had some laughs at the rooster and duck that seemed to be falling in love with eachother. They often sang in unison.
You shuttle service into town was outstanding. And lets not forget the food at your restaurent......it was delicious!

My husband and I spent 5 wonderful days at IL NIDO in March. Now 4 of my sisters and I are returning in September and cannot wait!!! What a gracious, hospitable and relaxing place to be!! Gianni,Dino and family are wonderfull.

I love your website. It's so real and down to earth. It's funny like all you guys are. It was truly an experience to be shuttled down that road as fast as possible to get to your destination and be told jokes by Gianni on the way down the hill. I'll never forget when he took us the last day to the train, it was too early for breakfast, so his mom gave us sweet bread from the kitchen so we wouldn't get on the train hungry. Through all of these travels I never enjoyed any place more than the night we stayed at your lovely Hotel. It is a pity we could not stay longer. Everything you have there is so great. Il Nido was a great hotel, one of the best that we stayed at on our recent visit to Italy. The personal attention that we received, the gorgeous views and the beautiful remote setting made our visit to the Sorrento Peninsula wonderful and memorable. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in May 2001. The "budget room" was a great value; very clean, a nice bathroom, and plenty of space. The lack of the "perfect view" is compensated by the magnificent view from the restaurant/balcony. Also the room has good, individual air conditioning units. The restaurant food was good and reasonably priced. Mama and Papa cook; the two sons and their wives run the place; truly a family affair with personal attention. The shuttle van to and from Sorrento is a great service. Il Nido ("The Nest") is 850 ft above Sorrento, a nice town with good shopping. I heartily recommend Il Nido.

We stayed for aprox thre nights at the hotel in May 2001. The views for the hotel are quite breathtaking and the staff are very friendly indeed. Although quite a ways away from the down town area this had several advantages add to that the regular "shuttle buses" that run between the hotel & the town and it means that the hote`s guest get the best of both worlds. One word of recomendation - the area in general is best accessed by car and hiring a car is really the ways to go. The hotel has its own parking and means that acess to both the hotel and the areas both on the sea and away into the hills are that much easier. Overall the hotel staff were both helpful and genuinely friendly - the hotel can become quite loud at night and a carpet on the lower floor would certainly keep the sound down. - aliitle oil on the door handles and locks would ceratinly also help. all in in all a nice & fiendly place to stay discover it for yourselves......

Dear Gianni, Just want to let you know that I sent an email to Rick Steves to tell him what a wonderful hotel and restaurant you have. We thoroughly enjoyed our four days at the Il Nido and very much appreciated the great service provided by you and Dino, and your sister and Teresa. The dinners were terrific, so we ate there every night. Needless to say, the rooms were very nice and the view unmatched! Did you know that on the day we left, we got all the way to Cassino when I remembered that I had left my airline tickets and passports in our room safe. We had to returm to the hotel and it took twice as long to get there. Maybe a sign at the desk would be a helpful reminder for feeble minded people like me! Did Rick Steves come for dinner on Sunday, May 6 ? I hope so. You can't miss being listed in his book. I have been telling all my traveling friends about the Il Nido Hotel. Buon Giorno Gianni and family! We want to thank you for the best hotel of our trip to Italy! The room was nice, the view was fabulous, we really enjoyed our balcony. What a special touch of Italy to offer clotheslines for us! We used them with pleasure! Our group of seven, with four rooms was treated to the most personal and wonderful service of our entire trip. When we arrived quite late, the first thing asked was "Have you eaten yet?" It was just like going to Mom's! We truly felt welcome in every sense, and never were made to feel that we were a bother, even whan we were late. Dave and I didn't personally experience the 9 minute ride to Sorrento (or was it 8?), but it was the talk of the others! You all went to the extreme to make sure we had an enjoyable stay, and the food was fabulous too! We WILL be back!!! I think with several more members of the family, the way all are talking. Gianni, ciao! We remember fondly our stay at the Hotel Il Nido last September and thank you for your friendliness, the excellent service, good home cooking - and tolerating my poor Italian! We'll be back - maybe not this year, sadly, but one year soon. And this part is for all those reading the guest book, wondering whether it's all true. It is. We arrived last September late at night. When we got up the next morning, we couldn't believe the view. High over the Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius in the distance. Our trips into Sorrento to visit the town or catch the train or ferries were made easy by Gianni's free, convenient bus service. We ate at the Hotel a few times, and found the food of high quality. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The room was spacious, well appointed and with a good-sized balcony (the view!!). In fact, it was far better than the room we had at a more expensive '4 Star' hotel in S. Agnello. If you're looking for a holiday in la bellissima Campania, look no further than the il Nido for your accommodation. Hard to beat. We'd be glad to confirm this guestbook entry: just send us an e-mail. Words cannot express the time we experienced with Il Nido. Dino and Gianni were wonderful hosts and to find such a treasure was a blessing. The evenings spent in the dining room drinking Limoncellos with other guests was the best of all. The intimate feeling of the dining room made it so easy to get to know others. I sit at work and wonder, "how many cats did Gianni hit today?"

my husband and I (not the queen of england) spent a most enjoyable 9 nights at il nido. It's not simply family-run; staying is being part of a family. Every evening was like coming home. The views are spectacular, the room (with balcony) well-appointed with all mod cons, the meals were good and very good value. Sitting in the bar in the evening with a glass of home made limoncello or a glass of local wine was all part of an unforgettable holiday.

We visited Italy for the second time within a year to bring my wifes parents to see where there parents came from. We stayed at the Hotel Il Nido on our way to Rome. The hotel was excellent and the food the best we had in Italy. Sorrento is so beautiful, even in the winter months. We did have trouble getting a favorable response from the airline Alitalia when weather conditons prevented our return to Boston through Milan. The Milan airport was closed due to weather and Alitalia was very poor in the response to get us home. I suggest that American travelers fly a domestic airlines, there are more options. The trip was great and the Hotel IL Nido is on our list when we return. The Noel's of York, Maine, USA

We visited Italy for the first time in Feb 2001 and stayed at Il Nido for a week. It lived up fully to the expectations created through the web site. The evening meals were outstanding and very good value. Above all everyone was "molto gentile". The only stupid thing we did was to hire a car instead of relying on Gianni's good offices - transfers to and from the airport by minibus, daily services to and from town by minibus plus bus train and ferry would have got us to all the places we visited (Naples, Pompeii, Capri, Amalfi, Positano) - and it would have been cheaper, less worry and NO SCRAPES(!)[Gianni couldn't help us with the wing mirror repair but he inspired enough confidence for us to contact the Opel garage in Pompeii oursleves and negotiate the job through (in Italian!).] Ray and Eve Sutton

The hotel was great - clean, friendly, good food etc. Gianni and Dino went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed during our stay. And the sun shone nearly every day. We had the pleasure of staying at the Il Nido Hotel for a few days in mid January. The weather was great and Sorrento was uncrowded and beautiful. Our room was perfect we had a balcony with an incredible view of Sorrento, The Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius ect. We were planning on trying different restaurants in Sorrento, but after the first dinner at Il Nido we ate there every night. The food was excellent and the whole dinning room has the same beautiful vistas. We look forward to coming back next year for more of the same.

I cannot thank Gianni enough for his hospitality during our stay! His friendly attitude and helpfulness was great! We had the most wonderful stay and everything was fantastic. I would highly recommend staying and dining here....it's simply the best! We were in Italy for 2 weeks and found the food here to be just fabulous...let Gianni choose a wine for your meal and you will not be disappointed! Don't forget to try the limoncella. It is perfect with some mouthwatering dessert. Our accomodations were very nice. Should we visit again, I would stay here without hesitation!

We very much enjoyed the stay at Il Nido. Not only were we very pleased by the feeling of a small family run hotel, but we very much appreciated the personal attention which you lavished on all of us. Your willingness to make phone calls and reservations for us, to fix Ken's eye glasses when he could not, to pick us up in town when we needed, and a thousand other little things help to make our stay especially nice. Of course, our rooms had beautiful views and we appreciated the fact that they were kept very clean. Especially nice were the times when the restaurant was not officially open, but you somehow managed to prepare delicious foods for us when we asked. Thank you. After traveling for 7 weeks, we have gotten safely home. We remember fondly our few days in your hotel in that perfect location, your help and kindness and especially your mother's wonderful cooking! I appreciated being able to send E-mail. (All got the messages) Of the 28 Hotels we stayed in on this trip, ilnido was the only one that offered E-mail. I think it is a great addition to conveniences you already have and you should advertise it on your web-site! Because of the 6 hour time difference and most of our family away from home during working hours, telephoning is difficult. We are always in the car in the middle of nowhere when its time to make the calls - Or - After breakfast, before we start traveling, it's 3:00 AM at home. FROM: ****************** I spent 6 weeks in italy last summer and one of the most breath taking view was from my room at the hotel "il nido" in sorrento. il nido means nest and as the name suggests this hotel is perched high up the hill side over looking the city of sorrento.This is a mom and pop organization that i just happened to find on the internet. the rooms were a nice size and very clean.cost was just about $ 40.00 USD.for a single with a bath. ac and tv. I almost fell down when i opened the curtain to the balcony and saw right across the bay of naples mount vesuvius.i couldn't have asked for a better view, but i got one when i had supper that evining outside under the stars. also the food was prepared by the owners wife and it was just great.and the price was unbelieveable. i paid about $20.00 USD for a 4 course meal with wine .I would strongly recommend to anyone going to sorrento to look into staying at il nido. joe ricco <> miami, fl USA 07/13/99

For anyone looking for a cozy place to stay, with a breathtaking view and Italian hospitality that cannot be undone, Il Nido is the place to go. Our words cannot describe the time we had in Sorrento, and Gianni and his family were a major reason why. The hotel is top notch, and neatly tucked away 3 miles from town, so sleeping is never a problem. Transportation is excellent, as the SITA bus runs right by the hotel all day, while Gianni graciously makes several runs down the mountain daily. The food was outstanding--the best we had in Italy. Again, there are not enough superlatives we can use to describe our stay in Sorrento. Our only advice is to stay with Gianni, his wife and brother at Il Nido!!!

We are now back in Australia and looking back on our holidays in Italy. The places we enjoyed staying was where the hospitality of the people at the hotel was of the highest standard. We think that Il Nido and a place in Soprabalzano were the top two places we stayed and particularly liked the offer "if you get into trouble with transportation, just ring us and we will come and pick you up." We never needed this but it was very reassuring.

We had a marvelous experience at the Hotel Il Nido in October 1999. The views from the hotel were magnificent. This is undoubtedly the most accomodating hotel we experienced in our three weeks in Italy. The management was excellent and the transportation service to catch the boat to Capri,leaving our car and baggage at the hotel, and picking us up at the dock the following day to return to the hotel was greatly appreciated. In fact, we missed staying in Grimmelwald (stayed in Murren instead at the Jungfrau Lodge) because your tour group was there At the time.We would like to recommend a hotel for your consideration. It was the highlight of our trip. We are referring to the Hotel IL NIDO Ristorante in Sorrento, Italy. This beautiful hotel is located above Sorrento in the hills overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento, and when clear, Mt. Vesuvious. Since we were 5 persons including our son, daughter, and 16 year old granddaughter, we had two rooms, both with balcony, sea view, private bath at a quoted price of 240,000 lires (about $130.00) including breakfast, parking, and tax. Gianni, the owner, was so friendly and helpful even providing transportation to Sorrento on two days. A public bus stops at the hotel and makes convenient , reasonable trips to Sorrento for all connections. Internet service is provided at a very reasonable cost. Not only was the view from our rooms outstanding, but from the terrace restaurant also. The food was delicious, reasonable, and lovingly prepared from fresh vegetables, herbs, and olives from the garden by Mama and Papa, the original owners of the hotel. In fact, we ate all four evenings at the hotel. Even though we had many other wonderful experiences during our trip, we felt most at home and most warmly received at this hotel. We look forward to a return to Sorrento and the IL NIDO. Please consider the IL NIDO for your next recommendations. Thanks for your many excellent suggestions. You will get there in the end. The maps are terrible, but just keep driving through Sorrento for ever and ever amen. If nothing hits you, you will get to Il Nido and collapse with delight. You must visit Pompeii. You should visit Herculaneum - don't take the car you will have to leave it in a dangerous area. We too spent 7 weeks in Europe (ten countries, 32 hotels and other lodgings), in our case beginning with a few days at Il Nido. Your hotel set the standard, in view, value, and friendliness. Most of our other stops were nice, but none managed to match yours in all three areas. And none of the others had readily available internet access and email, which we really appreciated. Carol especially appreciated your willingness to fix her eggs for breakfast, even though it was clearly not customary in Italy. We've recommended your hotel to others, and we'll be back if we ever return to your part of Europe.

There was a complimentary caffe for me that evening while I chatted in English, pseudo-Italian and pseudo-French with other guests. The single room felt palatial to me, after a week of hostelling! The view from the window of the single was exquisite anyway. The continental breakfast was wonderful too, with a view of the Bay of Naples spreading beyond the restaurant's window. For those of you who are thinking of staying at Il Nido, here are the top five reasons why you should go for it (I wanted to do a top ten, but I thought I'd leave room for other guests... :-) 1. The view. Make sure you request a room with a view of the water. There's nothing more beautiful that waking up to sunrise over Mt. Vesuvius. 2. The shuttle service. Don't worry about getting lost on another Italian city. Gianni will pick you up on his shuttle when you arrive at the train station(he was there for us in under 15 minutes) and will also drop you off at the port for Capri or at the train station for visits to Pompeii and Vesuvius. 3. The price. Shoot...I was a bit worried about what I was going to get for the low price that he quoted us. (A pensione with no bathroom, maybe?) But you'll get a good room, with a clean, western/US style bathroom (i.e. with bathtub, real toilet, and hairdryer), and good cleaning service. 4. The internet service. My fiance couldn't believe this one. We've stayed at fancier hotels in Italy and we have yet to see an in-house, modestly priced, fast internet access until we reached Il Nido. 5. The service with a smile. Gianni and his family are wonderful. They served a simple, but delightful breakfast in their beautiful restaurant every morning with genuine friendliness. We stayed at some of your recommended hotels (such as Pensione Guerrato in Venice - loved it - and Aberdeen in Rome - a bit disappointed, but at check-out they mentioned that our room in the back wasn't as nice as some others)... as well as other fabulous and not-so-fabulous places not in your book. But our very favorite, best experience was the 4 days we spent at Hotel Il Nido in Sorrento which is exactly the type of place your readers would really love. There have been a few postings on your site about it, and they have a website, www.ilnido.it. What we loved: the dropdead views over lemon groves, Sorrento, Ischia, the Bay of Naples, and especially Mount Vesuvius (even better than the photos on the website) from both our room and the restaurant: day, sunset, and night. The peace and quiet. The convenience: a few kms from downtown Sorrento, on the road to the Amalfi coast, near major sights like Pompeii, w/o the noise and fumes of downtown locations. The low price (130,000 lire for large comfy double seaview w/bath and balcony, inc. breakfast in their beautiful restaurant, looks like on their website they have gone up to 150,000 - still a great bargain. Cheaper for streetside.). The cappuccino (some of the best we had - and of course we drank it daily). The internet connection they offer guests at a low price for e-mail etc. The free transportation they offer to and from various points in Sorrento, hourly in both a.m. and p.m.: train, ferry, downtown. In the evening you just call them and they come pick you up! (Beyond the great service, this gave guests a chance to get to know them and other guests a bit - it was a fun part of the day, and helped make the experience unique.) Free parking (they apparently allow guests to leave cars there overnight while they go gallavanting off to Capri or somewhere. We had a car and this was a consideration). They speak English, French and maybe German. Reservations were easy to make by e-mail. But best of all was the warmth and helpfulness of the family who owns and runs it. 2 brothers, a sister, a wife I believe, and mom and pop. They do everything: desk, restaurant and bar cooking and serving, cleaning, shuttle. The guests were all treated with respect, kindness and generosity, and they made everyone feel very much at home and cared for. Gianni was the most outgoing (probably the most fluent in English), and would be the person to contact, at ilnido@syrene.it. He's the one who responded immediately to my emails, for both reservations and general travel information. If you go to their website and read their guestbook, you'll see how many other travellers have had similar experiences. The only hesitation about having them in your book is how hard it could become to get a reservation there. They're getting busy now. Not surprisingly, many of the other guests were American and internet users. They deserve a recommendation from you; I hope you'll visit them and check them out. Thanks for your attention. Gianni and his brother and family have created a wonderfully warm ambience that seems to magically expand to embrace all those who enter the hotel, drawing everyone into a close `family'. They say that hotel clients reflect their owners and this was certainly true of our time spent at Il Nido: everyone we met was delightful. The fantastic trips Gianni made throughout the day - meeting us from the station, running us around the town to the port or town centre and picking us up at varying hours) made for a lively, communal atmosphere in which everyone became friends in a very short time. The food was superb. Rooms and service were wonderful - both unpretentious and stylish. Everything seems to be done with love and care and this is reflected in the sunny atmosphere created inside Il Nido. Amazingly, it made one feel like contributing in some way - treating the place with grace as it had become our home. A gem of a place; a real find. Look no further. We felt sad when we left and had a dreary three days further down the coast in a place without a soul. The sense of fun, care and genuine warmth emanating from these lovely people and their terrific hotel - will always remain with us - till we return next time. And if you do as we did, and stay at Il Nido - you won't be disappointed. This is a very friendly, family run hotel - and we were well looked after. It's a little way out of town, but that means it's quiet,and the views are superb. Gianni runs a regular mini bus - but when we missed him by a couple of minutes, Dino took us to town in his car. This place is fantastic, we had a wonderful time. Lovely clean rooms, fantastic food, Gianni and his family are great and made us feel totally at ease right from the second we arrived. The views from the rooms are spectacular and it's a far better site than the hotels in the centre of sorrento. The hotels regular mini bus trips to town are very handy (ask Gianni to beep his horn for you). The hotel is an excellent base to see the amalfi coast, Naples and Pompeii. The mini-shuttle service made our holiday so easy and stress-free, it enabled us to "hit the town" whenever we wanted. Name: Marcel Valentin EMail: Date: 27/09/2000 Commenti We just returned from Sorrento last night. You will NOT find a better hotel anywhere in the Amalfi/Naples/Sorrento region. First of all, the view is spectacular! Where else on earth will you get to watch the sun rise and warm up the island of Capri on the left, stare at the world's most famous volcano (Vesuvius) in the center, and peek down into the charming town of Sorrento on the right?! The room balconies and especially the dining balcony offer unobstructed postcard views of all! Plus, below the hotel are a few citrus groves and vineyards. Bella Italia! The second reason to stay at the Il Nido is the service. Gianni and family go far out of their way to be helpful and make your stay enjoyable. Very patient people, their English is much better than my Italian and great food comes from their kitchen at dinner time. They are very hard-working people. Before we went, I was concerned that the hotel is located about 15 minutes outside of town. However, the hotel bus (it's free) provides frequent and reliable service to and from Sorrento (check the online schedule). In the mornings, the bus drops you right off at the train station front door. The bus always left and picked us up on time. Thanks again to the family. You and your hotel are truly one of a kind! The view was amazing, the whole Amalfi region was breathtaking, but the comfort and hospitality at this hotel was just what we needed. My wife and I felt like we were welcomed into a wonderful family, and enjoyed every second. We found ourselves looking for reasons to stay longer, and relax on the sun deck. We could not have asked for a more fantastic view of the bay than what we had from our room at Il Nido. It was a breathtaking sight during the day, and the lights were beautiful and romantic at night. The hospitality provided by you and your family was incredible. We simply cannot thank you enough for all the tourist information you gave us as well as all the shuttle rides to and from the center of Sorrento, the bus/train station and the harbor for our day trip to Capri. Also, the dinners at Il Nido were wonderful and priced so reasonably. Gianni, please be sure to tell your father how much we enjoyed his spaghetti sauce. For tourists visiting Sorrento, don't let the reasonable prices and distance from downtown steer you somewhere else. Il Nido is a great total experience you won't want to miss!! The cleaning standards are exceptional and all the staff went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable and as easy as possible - nothing seemed to be too much trouble!! My 7 month old nephew was catered for wonderfully - a high chair was purchased especially! Shame we didn't discover the restaurant until the last night - then again, if we had we would probably have never left the hotel!! Thanks for everything.

It is not luxurious, but comfortable and spotlessly clean. It is set in a marvellous location (our room, and the dining room, had a splendid view on the bay). The food is excellent. We enormously appreciated having access to the Internet and being able to read our mails. But, above all, the friendliness of the people is extraordinary. Gianni (who speaks perfect English and French) and his brother are so helpful and so kind. They offer a free shuttle service from and into town, and they are always ready with advice and tips, and to help you with anything that can make your stay more enjoyable. We had a wonderful time. If you plan to stay in the Naples area, it is THE place to stay. And, last but not least, there are convenient train connections from Sorrento to Naples, Pompei and Herculanum and the Vesuvio.
